H.E Serkong Tsenshap Rinpoche is the recognized reincarnation of Kyabje Tsenshap Serkong Tugse Rinpoche (1914–1983), one of the seven Tsenshabs, or master debate partners, to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. From 1948 until his passing in 1983, Tsenshap Serkong Tugse Rinpoche served His Holiness with unwavering dedication, transmitting to him numerous lineages, initiations, and oral instructions, while also guiding many disciples across the Tibetan Buddhist world.

Today, H.E Serkong Tsenshap Rinpoche is recognized for his ability to transmit the profound teachings of Tibetan Buddhism with clarity, warmth, and accessibility. His teachings, marked by depth of knowledge, humility, and a touch of humor, resonate with both monastic and lay audiences. He regards it as both a privilege and responsibility to carry forward the activities of his predecessor, aspiring to preserve and share the Dharma in a manner that meets the needs of the modern world.

Early Recognition and Lineage

H.E Serkong Tsenshap Rinpoche was born in 1984 in Lari village, Spiti Valley, in the Indian Himalayas. At the age of two, he spontaneously identified himself with a photograph of his predecessor, Kyabje Tsenshap Serkong Tugse Rinpoche (1914–1983). Shortly thereafter, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama formally recognized him as the reincarnation of this great master.

The first Tsenshap Serkong Tugse Rinpoche was one of only seven appointed Tsenshaps, or master debate partners, to His Holiness. In this unique role, he sharpened the Dalai Lama’s mastery of Buddhist philosophy through rigorous dialectical exchange, while also transmitting to him many vital tantric lineages, initiations, and oral teachings. He was deeply connected with numerous students, including Lama Thubten Yeshe, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, and early members of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), planting seeds of Dharma that continue to flourish today.

Official Biography of His Eminence Serkong Tsenshap Rinpoche II

Born on 29 May 1984 in Lari village, Spiti Valley

Born on 29 May 1984 in Lari village, Spiti Valley, in the Indian Himalayas, His Eminence Serkong Tsenshap Rinpoche was identified at the age of three and a half (circa 1987–1988) as the reincarnation of Kyabje Tsenshap Serkong Tugse Rinpoche (1914–1983). The recognition was formally confirmed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, attesting the reincarnation and acknowledging him as the successor to his predecessor.

Immediately following this, an enthronement ceremony was held at Tabo Monastery, the oldest continuously operating Tibetan monastery in India, founded in 996 C.E; recognizing him as the Spiritual Head of Tabo Monastery, affirming his responsibility to carry forward the spiritual leadership of this ancient monastic institution. Soon thereafter, he was brought to “Serkong Tsenshap Ladang”, the official residence of his predecessor, where preparations were made for his future education and training.

His Holiness offered early guidance and encouragement, laying the foundation for their monastic training and scholarly development.

Following the recognition, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama met personally in a joint audience with the recently recognized two-and-a-half-year-old Tulku of His Eminence Yongdzin Ling Rinpoche, at Dharamshala.

In a rare and intimate ceremony, His Holiness initiated them both into the learning of the first Tibetan alphabets. His Holiness offered early guidance and encouragement, laying the foundation for their monastic training and scholarly development.

Soon thereafter, representatives arrived to escort him to Gaden Jangtse Monastery where a second enthronement, a “Tsokchen Tulku” ceremony, a highly revered ritual within the Gelug tradition, took place at Gaden Jangtse Monastery and Gaden Lachi signifying the official installation of a high recognized reincarnate lama into his monastic seat. This endorsed His Eminence’s spiritual identity and established his responsibility to uphold the lineage of his predecessor within the monastic university.

It also marked the beginning of his formal scholastic training in Buddhist philosophy, debate, ritual practice, and monastic discipline within one of the great seats of learning of the Gelug tradition. He studied there up to the age of 17 until 2001, receiving extensive training in Buddhist philosophy, debate, rituals, monastic discipline and continued his advanced philosophical training until the age of 23.

He later enrolled at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics (IBD) in Dharamsala, where he completed advanced studies in Upper Madhyamika philosophy, earning a Master’s degree in Buddhist Philosophy in 2009.

In 2013, on the advice of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, His Eminence travelled to Canada to undertake three years of college-level English studies. He returned to India in 2016, trained to teach and communicate with an international audience.

Since 2017, His Eminence has been widely respected as a learned, warm, approachable, and compassionate teacher dedicated to preserving the “Nalanda Buddhist tradition”.

The teachings range from introductory preliminary instructions to advanced philosophical expositions, presenting profound doctrines in a manner accessible and relevant to contemporary life providing practical guidance on Buddhist practice and offering public lectures on applying Buddhist principles in the modern world. His Eminence teaches extensively across India and at Dharma centres worldwide including in Europe, North America, and Asia offering commentaries on key Buddhist philosophical texts.

In 2024, following with His Holiness’s advice, Rinpoche proposed establishing the “Serkong Institute for Buddhist Studies”. For several decades, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama has consistently emphasized on the importance of reviving and sustaining the “Nalanda Tradition”, an intellectual heritage of ancient India grounded in rigorous inquiry, critical thinking, and experiential understanding of the Buddha’s teachings. Despite the increasing prominence of this call to revive the Nalanda tradition, there remains limited understanding of what it practically entails for contemporary students of Buddhist philosophy. In many contexts, the phrase “Nalanda Tradition” is invoked symbolically, yet the methodological rigor that defines it, particularly its dialectical method of debate and analytical reasoning remains insufficiently understood or applied in modern learning environments.

A pilot immersion initiative offering an intensive program in Buddhist philosophy through the traditional dialectical method of debate was launched.

In response to this gap, and inspired by the guidance of his teacher, Geshe Tenzin Gyurmyi, a pilot immersion initiative offering an intensive program in Buddhist philosophy through the traditional dialectical method of debate was launched.

n 2025, this initiative was formalized as a dedicated project of the “Serkong Foundation”, an Indian non-profit organization based in Dharamshala that supports educational and cultural activities connected with the Nalanda Tradition.

His Eminence Serkong Tsenshap Rinpoche serves as the Spiritual Head of Tabo Monastery and as Life Patron of the Serkong Foundation, diligently preserving the lineage and legacy entrusted to him.
